Bmg Case Study
CASE STUDY IV. 3 BMG(A) 2824309 Which geographic market areas should be chosen for closer analysis? Introduction Bertelsmann Music Group, (BMG), is the global music division of Bertelsmann AG, a transnational media corporation founded in 1835, based in Gutersloh, Germany. Its headquarters are located in New York. BMG, established in 1987, is now one of the worldââ¬â¢s biggest music companies with more than 200 record labels in 42 countries. It is also home to one of the industryââ¬â¢s foremost music distribution companies and one of the worldââ¬â¢s largest music publishing companies. According to Table 1 BMG is the worldââ¬â¢s second record company in terms of global market share. Moreover Chart 1 shows that most of BMG revenues come from Europe and North America. Table 1: Global market shares of major players 2001 Vivendi Polygram Sony AOL Time Warner EMI BMG Market value % % % % % $ billion Australia 13 27 18 18 6 0. 7 Canada 20 13 24 10 8 1. 1 US 13 14 22 10 12 11. 2 Japan 13 18 7 14 8 7. 0 Germany 23 12 13 22 15 3. 0 UK 22 13 11 22 9 2. 4 France 32 25 13 19 11 2. 3 Netherlands 23 14 8 15 13 0. 7 Italy 19 16 17 15 24 0. 6 Korea 10 5 4 5 5 0. 5 Sweden 20 19 13 26 22 0. 3 Taiwan 17 5 14 6 5 0. 3 Other countries ââ¬â ââ¬â ââ¬â ââ¬â ââ¬â 5. 4 World 13 13 14 16 14 35. 5 {draw:frame} * {draw:frame} {draw:frame} {draw:frame} * {draw:frame} {draw:frame} {draw:frame} {draw:frame} {draw:frame} {draw:frame} Global Music Market Analysis {draw:frame} Table 2 ââ¬â Recorded Music Sales 2008 (trade value) Chart 3 ââ¬â Global digital revenue {draw:frame} Record companies are gradually changing their approach to do business as a response of a dramatic change in the way music is distributed and consumed. Nowadays digital platforms account for around 20% of recorded music sales, up from 15% in 2007. Recorded music is facing the so called online and mobile revolution, generating more revenue in percentage terms through digital platforms than newspaper, magazine and film industries combined. Assessment of potential market After this brief analysis of the global music market it is now time to decide which geographic areas, and specifically countries, would be right to expand BMGââ¬â¢s business. I will therefore analyze these three countries: Brazil, China and India. BRAZIL PEST ANALYSIS {text:list-item} {text:list-item} {text:list-item} {text:list-item} CHINA PEST ANALYSIS {text:list-item} {text:list-item} {text:list-item} {text:list-item} INDIA PEST ANALYSIS Economic Factors: The GDP (Purchasing Power Parity) is estimated at 2. 965 trillion U. S. dollars in the year 2007. The GDP per capita (PPP) was 2700 U. S. dollars as estimated in 2007. The GDP real growth rate in 2007 was 8. 7%. India has the third highest GDP in terms of purchasing power parity just ahead of Japan and behind U. S. and China. Foreign direct investment rose in the fiscal year ended March 31 2007 to about $16 billion from just $5. 5 billion a year earlier. There is a continuous growth in per capita income; Indiaââ¬â¢s per capita income is expected to reach 1000 dollars by the end of 2007-08 from 797 dollars in 2006-07. This will lead to higher buying power in the hands of Indian consumers. Social Factors: India is the second most populous nation in the world with an approximate population of over 1. 1billion people. This population is divided in the following age structure: 0-14 years ââ¬â 31. %, 15-64 years ââ¬â 63. 1% and 65 years and above ââ¬â 5. 1%. Technological Factors: Internet adoption continues to grow in India as well as the telecom market. According to the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the low cost of broadband has helped increase Internet usage (3. 7% of the population in 2007). E-commerce and high demand for . in domain registrations are also factors for the in crease in online users. Moreover sweeping reforms introduced by successive Indian governments over the last decade have dramatically changed the nature of telecommunications in the country. The mobile sector has grown more than tenfold from 2001 to around 60 million subscribers by mid-2005. Music market characteristic Brazil: Sales tax 15% / 18%; import tax 16%. 75% of the market share is made by domestic repertoire. The market is characterized by many small independent record companies. Commercial piracy is still a huge problem in South America, reaching levels above 50% in every country. India: Sales tax 4% /12. 5%; import tax 17. 3%. Size of the music industry estimate at USD 149 million. On a conservative basis, the music industry has been pegged to grow at 3% over the next five years. Till 1990, the music industry was completely dominated by film and devotional music. With the advent of satellite television and increasing consumer exposure to non-film albums and remixes have gained popularity recently. In the non-film category devotional music produced by smaller and local companies is the most popular. The Indian music industry is quite unique compared to those in other countries as it is virtually dependent on new Hindi (Bollywood) films for the lionââ¬â¢s share (40%) of its revenues. In the film centric Indian Music industry, there is virtually no loyalty for labels among the segment that buys only film music. China: Sales tax 17%; import tax 17%. It is characterized by an undeveloped piracy-dominated physical market and a rapidly-developing wireless environment. Mobile music is already far advanced. For the international record companies operating in China, sales of music via mobile phones already accounts for about 15% of industry revenues. There are five legitimate digital music services in China and we forecast there will be many more setting up in the next few years. In the past two years the volume of music made available online has increased more than six-fold to more than two million songs. Illegal sales of music are China is valued by IFPI at around US$400 million. Explication Emily Dickinson Essay
In the Poem ââ¬ËBecause I Could Not Stop for Deathâ⬠Emily Dickinson uses symbolism and allegory to portray a womanââ¬â¢s voyage to internal life. Emilyââ¬â¢s main symbols in the poem are to hide the true meaning of the symbols. In the first stanza the first symbol is introduced in the lines ââ¬Å"I could not stop for Death- He kindly stopped for me-.â⬠I these lines Emily explains how busy the woman is and she canââ¬â¢t stop for death. Dickinson then says ââ¬Å"Heâ⬠who is death takes the time to do what she cannot and stops for her. In the next couple lines which are ââ¬Å"The carriage held but just ourselves and immortality.â⬠Dickinson is trying to acknowledge that now this woman is with death on her ride to immortality, The ââ¬Å"Carriageâ⬠is a symbol for her voyage to eternity. In the second stanza Emily explains the womanââ¬â¢s slow ride. She expresses this in the line ââ¬Å"We slowly drove He knew no haste.â⬠Dickinson descri bes how deathââ¬â¢s politeness makes the woman step back from everything keeping her busy. Dickinson shows this in the lines ââ¬Å"And I had to put away my labor and my leisure too, for his civility.â⬠In the third stanza Dickinson explains the woman passing the life as she knew it. Emily then speaks of children playing at recess and fields off grazing grain. ââ¬Å"We passed the setting sun.â⬠This is the line of her transfer from one world to another. The fourth stanza explains the woman transforming to immortality. ââ¬Å"The dews drew quivering and chill.â⬠This line describes the coldness of death. ââ¬Å"For only gossamer, my gown my tippet only tulle.â⬠Emily describes how the womanââ¬â¢s clothes change from beautiful fabric to the opposite. Now the woman is dead. In the Fifth stanza the woman is taken too her ââ¬Å"Homeâ⬠which is described as a grave. ââ¬Å"We paused before a house that seemed a swelling in the ground.â⬠The home is a hole in the ground. ââ¬Å"The roof was scarcely visible the cornice in the ground.â⬠Dickinson explains how the ââ¬Å"roofâ⬠is barely visible. The last stanza is the woman talking.â⬠Since then ââ¬â ââ¬Ëtis centuries and yet feels shorter. ââ¬Å"The woman explains that all though she died a long time ago it feels as if it just happened. She remembers her feeling of when she first realized she was tooken by death. As you can see in Emily Dickinsonââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"Because I Could Not Stop for Deathâ⬠She uses allegory and symbolism. She uses these to explain the womanââ¬â¢s voyage to eternal life in death. She takes the voyage and breaks it up in the stanzas. Emily explains everything that happened without saying it. This is how she uses Symbolism and allegory, to give hints to the reader.

Margaret Atwood and Anwar Sadat Speeches Essay Example For Students
Margaret Atwood and Anwar Sadat Speeches Essay What makes the selected speeches worthy of critical study? Margaret Atwoodââ¬â¢s Spotty-Handed Villainesses (1994) and Anwar Sadatââ¬â¢s Statement to the Knesset (1977) are both speeches worthy of critical study because of their fascinating ideas and values. ââ¬Å"There was a little girl Who had a little curl Right in the middle of her forehead; When she was good, she was very, very good, And when she was bad, she was horrid! â⬠Atwood begins her speech with an anecdote and quotes this famous nursery rhyme to gain a personal connection with her audience and to introduce the subject of her speech ââ¬â women in literature. Atwood established herself as a controversial writer, bringing her radical views such as feminism to the centre of political discussion. Throughout the speech Atwood explores the changing role of women in society through their portrayal in literature and how these roles have changed through time. Throughout Spotty-handed villainesses, Atwood uses many language features and techniques that help her complex ideas get through to the audience. Atwoodââ¬â¢s use of a relaxed, humorous and personal tone means she can connect more with the audience allowing her to express to them her complex ideas and values on women in literature. Colloquialisms make Atwoodââ¬â¢s speech more accessible to the audience and the humour of hem is engaging ââ¬â ââ¬Å"flogging a few dead horsesâ⬠. Although Atwoodââ¬â¢s values can cause her to be seen as a feminist, she rejects this stereotype by using the colloquial term ââ¬Å"sex bombâ⬠which would usually not be used by a feminist. The use of question and answer ââ¬Å"What is a novel? â⬠cause the audience to think about what she is saying and also allows the reader to explain the concept. The use of a humorous metaphor and religious allusion comparing to job of a novelist to Godââ¬â¢s creation of the world ââ¬Å"one detail at a timeâ⬠emphasises the difficulty of writing and appeals to the religious beliefs of the audience. The speech has a distinct chronological structure which means it has direction and is easy to follow. The language features and techniques used in Atwoodââ¬â¢s speech adds to the worthiness of the speech for critical study. Atwoodââ¬â¢s speech raised some important issues in the era following a strong feminist push. She was able to find a balance between support for the Womenââ¬â¢s Movement whilst criticising it for its excesses. As a result of this mature stance, her speech was respected by many for addressing the important issue of women in society, and doing it in an entertaining manner. Atwood was influential during the feminist movement which began in the 60s and her influence is shown through her literary works. Her speech raises the issue of the role that women should take in society looking at it through the portrayal of women in literature. Atwoodââ¬â¢s historical and literary references allow her to validate her points and to explore the role of women and how they are portrayed in literature (good and bad). The audience can easily identify with them ââ¬â Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Lady Macbeth. Atwood supports her ideas with language techniques and features making her speech worthy of critical study. Great speeches combine language techniques and features with structure to reveal and emphasis their key points. One of Sadatââ¬â¢s most memorable themes in his Statement to the Knesset is the value of ââ¬Å"permanent peace based on justiceâ⬠. The repetition of this phrase emphasises the point and makes sure the audience will remember it. Sadat uses enumeration to structure his arguments ââ¬Å"the fist factâ⬠, ââ¬Å"the fifth factâ⬠etc. this enables the audience to clearly follow his arguments further emphasising his ideas. Also by stating his argument as a ââ¬Å"factâ⬠he gives more authority to the argument. Lastly, Sadat uses imagery to portray two possible futures. One is of ââ¬Å"the ruins of what mankind has built and the remains of the victims of mankindâ⬠; the other is of ââ¬Å"a smile on the face of every child born on our landâ⬠. .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 , .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .postImageUrl , .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 , .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395:hover , .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395:visited , .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395:active { border:0!important; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395:active , .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395 .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0c0887fc3168a7e7fadd71ec3c552395:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Counseling And Psychotherapy EssayBy juxtaposing such extreme visions Sadat forces his audience to agree with his point by appealing to a common goal of a better future. Sadat ensures his audience remembers the idea of ââ¬Å"permanent peace based on justiceâ⬠by employing a number of rhetorical devices to ensure they both understand and agree with the idea. Like Atwood, Sadat uses biblical references in his speech to relate to the audiences religious beliefs ââ¬Å"In the name of Godâ⬠and uses ââ¬Å"youâ⬠to connect directly with the audience. These language features and techniques used in Sadatââ¬â¢s Statement to the Knesset reinforce the complex themes and ideas in the speech, making it worthy of critical study. Before this speech there had been four wars and continuous battles and terrorism between Israel and Egypt. This was the beginning of Egyptian interest in reaching a diplomatic solution, which later resulted in the Camp David peace agreement. The audience was strongly religious and there was a violent opposition who didnââ¬â¢t support his ideas. Sadatââ¬â¢s biblical allusions and emphasis on God referring to Him as ââ¬Å"God Almightyâ⬠helped Sadat to connect more with the audience and their religious views. The importance of Sadatââ¬â¢s reoccurring theme throughout the speech of ââ¬Å"permanent peace based on justiceâ⬠is emphasised through the use of structure and language techniques and features. Both Margaret Atwoodââ¬â¢s Spotty-handed Villainesses and Anwar Sadatââ¬â¢s Statement to the Knesset are worthy of critical study due to their complex underlying themes and values that are emphasised and supported by language techniques and features and obvious structure.
